Ever since Tonya Harding's famous triple axel jump in the 1991 Nationals LP, she has garnered attention from all around the world as the first female skater to complete two triple axel jumps in a competition. But her "not-so-good" side has been shown on media pretty often. Now, almost two decades after her career has ended, Hollywood resurrects this story for the big screen and shows what has been happening behind the scenes of her life.
Tonya Harding (Margot Robbie) has been treated badly by her mother, LaVona Golden (Allison Janney), almost all of her life but the ice ring lets her escape from problems and reality. As she rises to the top, her career takes a wrong turn when she meets her future husband, Jeff Gillooly (Sebastian Stan), and a sequences of bad choices and impatience bring Tonya to desperate actions.
I, Tonya is a mixture between real life pain and dark humor that brings the story towards more of a particle set of audience. This movie was made to entertain people who are more familiar with the subject rather for those who don't know anything. The movie's style is one that can be described as "hypnotic". The characters break the fourth wall and speak directly to the audience, there are beautiful slow motion shots, and actors are presented in the modern day in a mockumentary-style. Craig Gillispie manages to balance a biographical story with fictional elements that add to the intrigue of the characters and people in the movie.
Margot Robbie does a fantastical job portraying Tonya Harding and she definitely puts herself in the higher regard of professional actors in the industry. Sebastian Stan is equally amazing as Robbie and gives his character a much deeper meaning than just being a rude and cruel husband. But the person who stills the movie in every sense of the word, is Allison Janney. She gives her all in this role and proves that she is a fearless actress with lots of ambition. And her Oscar win is well deserved.
The movie does have some draw backs, like the always changing tone and elements of the movie which sometimes seems uneven. I felt the movie could have been a bit shorter on 20 or 15 minutes but the extra footage does act as a catalyst for the people to continue watching.
All in all, I, Tonya is a mesmerizing movie, one that gives a lot of depth and feelings to the story.
