Looking back at the most twisted and grotesque films, one might think about the films of the New French Extremity movement. The films of this movement include: Martyrs (2008), Inside (2007), High Tension (2003), Them (2006), and many more including this one. Directed by a woman and having a female lead is only one of the many positive aspects that this movie has. Making her directorial debut, Coralie Fargeat, does an astonishing job on her first movie and shows that woman directors can be as good as men.
The movie follows Jennifer (Matilda Lutz) a new girlfriend of her rich boyfriend, Richard (Kevin Janssens), who is spending the weekend at his remote desert penthouse. Unexpectedly, Richard's two hunting pals arrive, Stanley and Dimitri (Vincent Colombe and Guillaume Bouchède), who begin to taunt and assault Jennifer. The trio throw her down a cliff and leave her to die. Now, she must find the strength to exact her brutal revenge.
Revenge is a surprisingly good movie with lots and lots of blood. Honestly, this movie must come with a health warning before anyone goes to see it because there are really some brutal and grotesque moments. By the end of the film, the whole penthouse gets drained in blood. The cinematography was absolutely stunning with lots of wide shots of the desert landscape and indoor shots of the penthouse. The special effects of the film were also pretty good, which added to the look and appeal of the movie. What I also liked about Revenge is that it goes into so many different places all at ones and keeps the tension throughout the movie. The film also gives the audience a great survival story with the main character maturing throughout the film.
Matilda Lutz gave a pretty decent performance as the light-headed Jennifer. Her transition from a helpless girlfriend to a warrior was a very natural process that the audience came to see. Her character worked on both levels of the film and made some smart decisions along the way, becoming the hunter instead of the hunted. The rest of the male cast, also did a pretty good job of displaying their characters on film.
One of the problems I had with the movie was a few moments that didn't make sense at all. Like, when Jennifer gets impaled on a branch and doesn't die of blood loss or her continuous running with a branch in her stomach. A few of these cliches did annoy me a bit.
In conclusion, Revenge is a must see film for a horror movie lovers but isn't exactly the type of movie for the squeamish.
