The Commuter: A Surprisingly Fast Paced and Tension Filled Thriller.

As far as Liam Neeson action movies go, this is one of the better ones but doesn't reach the level of Taken. I kept my hopes pretty low for this one because from the trailer it seemed like another Taken movie. Maybe that's why I liked it, because I kept my hopes low. There are quite a few twists and turns here and there (which are pleasant) but they don't save the movie from cheesy and clique moments (which had to be involved with Liam Neeson jumping from train to train. *eye roll*).

The movie follows Michael (Liam Neeson) a business man (who also turns out to be an ex-cop. *eye roll*) on his daily commute home, which he has been doing for the past 10 years. He is approached by a mysterious woman, Joanna (Vera Farmiga), who offers him a large amount of money for in exchange to find a person who doesn't belong on the train, for undisclosed reasons.

The action kicks in from the very beginning and the audience feel very attached to Neeson's character, as a father and a husband. The plot surprisingly finds ways for the main character to explore every corner of the train and take advantage of the fellow commuters as suspects. I wouldn't say the action is anything special but the tension filled moments make up for that. I honestly found the tension moments to be one of the best aspects of this film, making the viewer guessing and keeping them at the edge-of-their seat.

Liam Neeson's acting isn't bad, but I felt it was weaker than in the Taken franchise. Vera Farmiga is a very mysterious and haunting character and I appreciate her effort in this movie, even though being on screen for less than 10 minutes, her character isn't forgotten through out the film. Patrick Wilson and Sam Neill were also very good in this movie but felt their characters were a bit underdeveloped.

The only problem I had with the movie is of course the amount of clique moments that were present. Surprisingly, I expected way more cheese but was given only half of it. The amount of times Liam Neeson escaped death here was very minimal (even though being a retired 60-something cop) but there was one scene were he jumped from train to train and I had to roll my eyes.

Over all, I found The Commuter to be very enjoyable and one of the better action-clique movies. You won't be disappointed by it.

Score: 6.5/10

60/100

Liam Neeson in his famous pose.
