Mother!: The Most Controversial Film of 2017.

I was really expecting a high-octane thrill ride from Darren Aronofky's Mother! I got more than I bargained for because the movie goes completely off the rails (and that's a compliment). Darren Aronofsky has possibly made the sickest film of 2017 and I love it! I decided to review this movie first because I felt that it was the most impactful movie of 2017 that was very divisive.

The movie follows Him (Javier Bardem) a successful poet who lives with Mother (Jennifer Lawrence) his new wife in a secluded country house. Everything seems to be going fine until one day Man (Ed Harris) and Woman (Michelle Pfeiffer) arrive at their doorstep, disrupting their tranquil existence. Don't be fooled by this short synopsis which may seem as your average Home-Invasion/Psychological Thriller. No, It's more than that. It's filled with huge allegories and metaphors. Almost every object in the scene represents something biblical. Yes, BIBLICAL. Aronofsky managed to make another movie with biblical elements (his earlier one was the 2014 Noah) that perfectly balances the tone and structure of the movie.

Jennifer Lawrence gave one of her best performances yet and I'm really surprised that the Golden Globes didn't give her a nomination for her performance. Hopefully, the academy will overlook that and give her the respected nomination she deserves. Michelle Pfeiffer was outstanding. She too deserves an academy award for Best Supporting Role. Javier Bardem and Ed Harris were both spectacular. They both gave intense performances alongside their co-stars.

The movie starts out light-hearted and slowly shifts to more intense and emotional tone. By the third act, you will be asking yourself "What the hell is happening?!" I don't want to give much away because this movie deserves to be watched without knowing anything. In the end, it all depends on the people who have experienced this movie. People either hate it or love it, there are no neutral views on this movie. Give this movie a shot and it will for sure be held as a cult classic in the near future.

Score: 7.6/10

80/100

Jennifer Lawrence being terrorized by the uninvited guests.
