With this being a second prequel in the Insidious franchise, we get to learn Elise's backstory and quite a few revelations along the way. For as long as the Insidious movies have been going for; this installment still proves that the franchise isn't dead yet but the audience can sense that the creative team behind the movies are running out of ideas. The Last Key gives audience what it wants but doesn't go full throttle.
The movie continues with Elise (Lin Shaye) as she is contacted by a man, who lives in her old family home, disturbed by a demonic presence and asks her to take on the task of haunting it down. She is joined by Specs (Leigh Whannell) and Tucker (Angus Simpson), as her sidekicks. They travel to New Mexico and there they are met with both terrifying hauntings and long buried secrets.
I really expected the movie to be the worst of the series (even worse than Chapter 2) but to my surprise it was actually quite good. Its no masterpiece but the amount of effort that has been put into this movie is seen in every shot. From Lin Shaye's acting to the set design, its a very good start to the year. I did indeed had problems with it, the recycled jump-scare material (even though there are moments of creepy atmosphere just as in the first movie), the sometimes unnecessary awkward humor and underdeveloped characters.
Line Shaye really stood out for me in this movie. She showed some pure and emotional acting (she always does) and gave more depth to her character. Specs and Tucker were you're usual funny-ghostbusters-buddies and gave young audiences characters they could relate to. The rest of the characters (aside from Josh Stewart) I felt were a bit underdeveloped but still made sense in the movie.
In conclusion, give this installment a watch and the fans of the franchise will certainly be pleased.
